Classes

Children’s Theatre of Elgin offers interactive workshops that teach theater skills, explore imagination, and help increase confidence on stage and off, not to mention the fun with other kids who love theater!

If CTE cancels a workshop, parents will be notified by email along with a rescheduled date and time. If student is unable to attend, CTE will provide a full refund of fees, minus credit card fees.

Due to the necessity of acquiring essential workshop materials, no refunds will given less than five days before the workshop date for any reason.

Workshop cancellation and refund policy:

If CTE cancels a workshop, parents will be notified by email along with a rescheduled date and time. If student is unable to attend, CTE will provide a full refund of fees, minus credit card fees.

Full refunds are offered up to 24 hours before the class begins. If parents cancel a student’s workshop registration due to illness or other emergency, after that time they will receive a 75% refund, minus credit card fees if any. 75% Refunds are available within five (5) days of the class. Tiny Thespians Camp Age 4-6

Is your little one bursting with energy and creativity? Our Tiny Thespians class is the perfect place for children aged 4-6 to explore the magical world of theater. This summer, we’re not just teaching theater basics—we’re igniting imaginations and fostering a lifelong love for the arts!

What You’ll Experience:

Imaginative Play: Dive into a world of make-believe, where stories come alive through games, songs, and movement. Our interactive sessions are designed to spark creativity and encourage self-expression.

Storytelling Adventures: Explore beloved tales and create new ones together. Learn how to use voices, gestures, and imagination to bring characters to life.

Dance and Movement: Get moving with fun dance routines and creative movement exercises. Develop coordination, balance, and confidence while having a blast!

Musical Theatre – 2nd Grade through 12th Grade

Are you ready to step out of the chorus? Our Musical Theatre Workshop is the perfect place for young performers aged 13-23 to hone their skills in singing, acting, and dancing. This summer, we’re not just teaching techniques—we’re helping you integrate them seamlessly to create captivating performances!

What You’ll Experience:
Acting Through Song: Learn how to bring characters to life through music. Understand the importance of storytelling and emotional depth in your performances. Discover how to analyze lyrics, connect with your character’s motivations, and convey authenticity on stage.

Integration of Disciplines: Practice combining singing, acting, and dancing to create cohesive performances. Learn how to balance technical skills with emotional expression and storytelling.

Dance For Non – Dancers – 2nd Grade through 12th Grade

Are you eager to move your body and express yourself through dance, but feel like you have two left feet? Our Dance for Non-Dancers class is the perfect place for anyone looking to explore the joy of dance without any prior experience. This summer, we’re not just teaching dance steps—we’re helping you find your rhythm and confidence!

What You’ll Experience:
Beginner-Friendly Environment: Our supportive and non-intimidating space is designed to make you feel comfortable and encouraged. No dance experience is necessary—just a willingness to have fun!

Basic Dance Techniques: Learn the fundamentals of various dance styles, from hip-hop to contemporary, in a way that’s easy to follow and enjoyable. Discover how to move with freedom and expression.

Improvisation and Play: Engage in improvisational exercises that help you connect with music and your own body. This is your chance to let loose and find your unique style.

Our Introduction to Improvisation class is the perfect place for anyone looking to explore the exciting world of improv. This summer, we’re not just teaching improv techniques—we’re helping you unlock your spontaneity and confidence!

What You’ll Experience:
Improv Fundamentals: Learn the basics of improvisation, including listening, agreement, and playing truthfully. Discover how to create engaging scenes and stories on the spot.

Games and Exercises: Engage in a variety of fun and interactive games designed to help you develop your improv skills. From simple warm-ups to complex scenarios, every session is packed with laughter and learning.

Scene Work: Practice building scenes from scratch, focusing on character development, plot progression, and teamwork. Learn how to support your fellow improvisers and create cohesive, entertaining performances.

Intro to Theatre 2nd Grade through 9th Grade

Are you curious about the magic of theatre? Our Introduction to Theatre class is the perfect place for young explorers in 2nd to 7th grade to discover the basics of theatre and ignite their passion for the performing arts. This summer, we’re not just teaching theatre fundamentals—we’re sparking a lifelong love for the stage!

What You’ll Experience:

Theatre Basics: Learn the fundamentals of theatre, including acting, directing, set design, costumes, and more. Understand how all these elements come together to create a captivating show.

Acting Fundamentals: Explore the basics of acting, such as using your voice, body, and imagination to bring characters to life. Practice simple scenes and exercises to build confidence and creativity.

Storytelling Techniques: Discover how to tell engaging stories through theatre. Learn about plot, characters, and setting, and how to use these elements to create compelling performances.

Playwriting – 7th Grade through 12th Grade

Are you a budding writer with a passion for storytelling? Our Playwriting Workshop is the perfect place for young writers aged 13-23 to explore the art of crafting compelling plays. This summer, we’re not just teaching playwriting techniques—we’re helping you bring your unique voice and stories to the stage!

What You’ll Experience:
Playwriting Fundamentals: Learn the basics of playwriting, including character development, plot structure, dialogue, and pacing. Discover how to create engaging characters and narratives that captivate audiences.

Script Analysis: Study successful plays and analyze what makes them tick. Understand how to apply these insights to your own writing and improve your craft.

Our Summer Acting Technique Camp is the perfect place for young actors aged 13-23 to hone their craft, build confidence, and take their acting skills to the next level. This summer, we’re not just teaching acting techniques—we’re helping you become the best version of yourself on stage!

What You’ll Experience:

Mastering Monologues: Learn how to choose, prepare, and perform captivating monologues that will make you stand out at auditions. Discover how to connect with the material, convey emotion, and command the stage.

Scene Study: Dive into the world of scene work, learning how to analyze scripts, develop characters, and bring scenes to life. Practice working with partners, building chemistry, and creating believable moments.

Audition Techniques: Get insider tips on how to ace auditions. Learn how to prepare, present yourself confidently, and handle nerves. Our expert instructors will guide you through mock auditions, providing feedback to help you improve.

Character Development: Explore the art of creating rich, nuanced characters. Learn how to research, analyze, and embody roles, making your performances more authentic and compelling.

Let’s Do a Play 2nd Grade through 9th Grade

Are you ready to dive into the magic of storytelling and bring a one-act play to life? Our One Act Play Camp is the perfect place for young performers to explore the thrill of theatre production. This summer, we’re creating a memorable experience that focuses on the power of storytelling and teamwork!

What You’ll Experience:
Script Analysis: Learn how to analyze scripts, develop characters, and understand the story’s themes and messages.

Rehearsals and Performance: Spend three weeks rehearsing and perfecting your roles. Work closely with our experienced directors to bring the play to life with minimal sets, costumes, lighting, and sound. Focus on the core elements of storytelling: acting, dialogue, and interaction.

Theatre Basics: Learn the fundamentals of theatre production, including stage directions, blocking, and basic stage etiquette. Understand how to work effectively as part of a team to create a cohesive performance.

Improvisation and Adaptability: Engage in improvisation exercises to enhance your acting skills and adaptability. Discover how to think on your feet and respond creatively to unexpected moments during performances.

This is not an introduction class. Students who have never performed live are encouraged to choose a different class.

This is a 3 week course and participants are expected to attend all three weeks. This class will include a small performance on Thursday evening at 7:00 PM

Let’s Do a Musical 2nd Grade through 9th Grade

Are you ready to shine on stage and bring a musical to life? Our “Let’s Do a Musical” class is the perfect place for young performers to explore the magic of musical theatre. This summer, we’re not just teaching musical theatre basics—we’re creating a fun and engaging experience that combines singing, acting, and dancing!

Summer Set Building – Age 13 – Age 23

Are you ready to unleash your creativity and become a part of something truly magical? Our Summer Set Building Camp is the perfect place for young artists aged 13-23 to dive into the world of set design and construction. This summer, we’re not just building sets—we’re building memories!

What You’ll Experience:

– Set Building for Puffs and SpongeBob: Be part of our upcoming productions by helping build the sets for “Puffs” and “SpongeBob SquarePants.” Get hands-on experience with designing and constructing the magical worlds of these beloved shows.

– Mastering Broadway and Hollywood Flats: Learn the art of creating both Broadway and Hollywood flats. Discover the differences between these two iconic styles and how they’re used in theater and film. You’ll get to build your own flats and see them come to life on stage!

– Platform Building: Understand the fundamentals of building platforms, a crucial element in set design. Learn how to create sturdy, versatile platforms that can transform any stage.

It’s not just about theory; you’ll be actively involved in building sets and flats, applying your creativity and skills in real-world scenarios.

Join us for a summer that will leave you inspired, skilled, and eager for more!

This workshop will take place at our scene shop. Participants will be using power tools. You must be 13 or older to participate in this camp.
