Technical Theatre Workshop
$175 | Grades 8–12 | 8 Sessions, Saturdays 11am-2pm
Starts July 11th!
Step behind the scenes and learn how the magic of theatre gets built from the ground up.
CTE’s Technical Theatre Workshop is an 8-session hands-on training program for students interested in scenic design, set building, props, painting, backstage work, and the creative problem-solving that brings a production to life. This program is perfect for students who love theatre but may not want to be onstage and performers who want to better understand the technical side of a show.
Throughout the workshop, students will learn the basics of technical theatre in a safe, supervised, and educational environment. Topics may include scenic design, reading ground plans, shop safety, measuring and marking, scenic painting techniques, props and set dressing, backstage etiquette, and how a production crew works together during rehearsals, tech week, and performances. Students will gain practical skills, build confidence using theatre tools and terminology, and explore the many creative roles that exist behind the curtain.
Students will receive one credit hour through our partnership with Elgin Community College. Participation in this workshop also gives students the option to be considered for volunteer opportunities with Fox Valley Theatre’s production crew for The Lightning Thief. Production crew opportunities are separate from the class, optional, and based on student interest, readiness, availability, and production needs. Students who volunteer with the production crew may be eligible to receive documented volunteer/service hours.
For safety reasons, students will not operate restricted tools or equipment, including power saws, nail guns, rigging equipment, or other tools deemed inappropriate for student use. All activities will be supervised by adult staff or approved adult volunteers.
Students will learn:
- Scenic design basics and how sets support storytelling
- Shop safety, tool awareness, and backstage expectations
- Measuring, marking, organizing, and basic build support
- Scenic painting, texture, and finishing techniques
- Props, set dressing, and production details
- How a technical theatre crew supports a live show
- Collaboration, problem-solving, and theatre professionalism
This program is ideal for students who:
- Are curious about what happens backstage
- Enjoy building, painting, crafting, designing, or organizing
- Want to learn theatre skills beyond performing
- Are interested in volunteering on a production crew
- Want a creative, hands-on experience in a supportive environment
Note: Students registered in this workshop are not able to be in the cast of The Lightning Thief due to conflicting schedules. Space is limited to ensure students receive hands-on instruction and meaningful supervision.
